God Will Catch Us

Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. – Proverbs 3:5-6

I have found comfort in these words over the years and have shared them with many people, especially my children. However, in my long discernment over transitioning from my business career to seminary and ordained ministry, I wrestled with God. I didn’t trust God’s call on my life. I wanted things my way. However, I wasn’t at peace. Then I read a book by Henri Nouwen called Sabbatical Journeys.

In this book he describes the relationship between the “catcher” and the “flyer” in a circus trapeze performance. He says that the flyer swings on the trapeze and then, at precisely the right moment, lets go and flies through the air to be caught by the catcher. Nouwen stressed the importance of the flyer holding the position as still as possible while making the dangerous journey through the air to the catcher. He tells about interviewing one of the Flying Roudellas, who said to him, “The flyer must never try to catch the catcher.” His point was that the flyer just trusts that the catcher will catch. Isn’t it like that with us and God? God has promised each of us that he has a plan for our lives. God’s Holy Spirit works in our lives in ways we would never have anticipated. Sometimes in far better ways than how things were before. Just like the trapeze flyer in the circus, we must let go and fly through danger, disappointment or uncertainty filled with trust and hope. And as we trust and center on God, God will catch us.
– Pastor MacLean, May 2015
