Thinking With . . . Pastor
Bakken
As I sit in my office
looking out over Minnehaha Creek, the long awaited first signs of winter’s arrival are slowly covering the brown grass
and clinging to the limbs of the trees. There is nothing like a fresh covering of snow to transform a landscape from dirt
and dried leaves to a blanket of brilliant white; giving the world a fresh new look. Yet, underneath
that cottony blanket of snow, lie the plants, grass and flowers that have been tucked in for a long winter’s nap, along
with the hope and promise of what spring will bring. I turned back from that picturesque view
to focus on my morning devotions. From 1 John 1:9 "If we confess our sins, he who is faithful and just will forgive
us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness." My eyes went back to the wintery
scene that was playing out before me, and I marveled at the earth’s transformation. Like
the grass and the trees being blanketed in snow, so is God’s grace constantly washing away the sins that we have committed
and leaving us as clean and fresh as fallen snow. God’s grace is given to us out of his deep love for us, not by anything
we have done. As we are wrapped in that Grace, we place our confidence and trust in God, who
in Christ, promises us forgiveness, life and salvation. When we open our heart to God and confess
our sins, we receive God’s forgiveness; and we are cleansed and made complete. As the snow
falls down around you this winter, may it be a reminder of God’s Grace wrapping itself around you.
